Food and Nutrition Insecurity Indicators

Mortality rate of children under 5 years attributable to malnutrition

Studies confirm the relationship between protein-energy malnutrition and other nutritional deficiencies with health problems, especially in infant and preschool children. Results of meta-analyzes with World and Central America information confirm the relationship between rates of malnutrition and  the risk of dying in preschool children.

As shown, the mortality risk attributable to malnutrition among children underfive years increases as it increases the prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition, expressed as weight deficit. in the preschool population.

Physical GrowthofPreschooland Schoolin relationto nutrition and health

The variability found in the height of preschool children, as shown in the figure, and the school children, adolescents and adults can be interpreted differently, depending on your location and socioeconomic status. While in a developed country this variability reflect primarily the influence of hereditary factors in the developing countries would be interpreted as an effect of environmental conditions, especially food and disease, modeling growth and development. As with height, other measures of physical growth such as  weight, body circumferences, skinfolds, etc.  are affected by food and disease. Therefore, short stature or height of preschool and schoolchildren is considered a valid indicator of chronic malnutrition in developing countries.
